SANDESTIN, FL 2021
Black Bear Bread Co. expanded out of its Grayton Beach location to bring historic, neighborhood bakery warmth to Grand Boulevard. This artisan-driven culinary anchor was designed to serve both locals and travelers from its storefront nestled in the ground floor of the Sandestin Hyatt in Miramar Beach, FL
MVD’s primary design challenge was to package the bakery’s cozy feel that its customers had come to expect into a crisp, commercial storefront. They selected white tongue-and-groove wood walls that are energetic, but subtly glow with warmth. Meanwhile, an abundance of natural materials (wood, leather, marble) on the interior softens the commercial nature of the location. Dark leather banquettes welcome visitors to linger over coffee and to relax with old-world sophistication.
This compact space needed to support two, distinct spatial flows. The front zone focuses on high-efficiency transactions, guiding grab-and-go guests smoothly past artisan pastry displays. Bags of Black Bear Bread Company’s signature coffee beans reassures guests that quality need not suffer in the name of speed. Elegant round marble bistro tables pair with built-in bench seating creates an inviting space for guests to comfortably work or catch up over a latte.
Finally, the iconic black bear logo continues to pay homage to the original Grayton Beach bear family that stopped by the first location hoping to test early batches of delicious pastries. The emblem is prominent to assure visitors that they have arrived at the right place. MVD’s design team delivered a soulful community destination that feels both deeply familiar and perfectly polished.
